In an effort to give adequate notice and to keep everyone informed, the following information is provided regarding our new Personal Communication Device Policy at Gulf Shores Elementary School.

The Alabama FOCUS Act (Freeing Our Classrooms of Unnecessary Screens for Safety), signed into law in May 2025, bans student use of personal wireless devices—such as smartphones, smartwatches, and gaming devices—during the instructional day beginning the 2025–2026 school year. Devices must be turned off and stored out of sight, such as in backpacks. Although we have not had many issues over the years with students having phones, we have seen a lot of smartwatches, which also are now required to be in backpacks in the off position, should you choose to send them to school with your child.

At Gulf Shores Elementary School, students are expected to adhere to the policy to remain compliant with the FOCUS Act. Should the policy not be adhered to, the following consequences will be enacted.

First Offense: Phone/device taken; referral sent; admin conference and parent call; student picks up phone/device at end of day.
Second Offense: Phone/device taken; parent must pick up from office.
Third Offense: • Phone/device taken; parent pickup and conference; logged as defiance; device banned for rest of year.
